2. Spring Comes and Goes- Yanqing Wild Duck Lake

Yeyahu National Wetland Park is the first national wetland park in Beijing City. Located in the northwest of Kangzhuang Town in Yanqing County, it borders Kangxi Grassland in the south and faces Guihe River in the north as an important bird habitat and transfer station in North China.

It adjoins Guanting Reservoir. When Guanting Reservoir was built, villages in the inundated area below an altitude of 479 meters in western Yanqing were moved, leaving a tract of mudflat and marsh to gradually form a wetland ecological environment of species richness and biodiversity.

Wild Duck Lake has four distinctive seasons. Spring comes back to the earth, so the ice and snow melts. Buds appear on willows along Wild Duck Lake with scattered wild flowers. Numerous birds migrate from the south float on the river, or roost on the grass land, or hover between blue sky and white clouds, brimming over with vigor and vitality. Wild ducks paddle and swans leisurely float on the river, showing dynamic beauty. Wild Duck Lake is the paradise for birds as well as the migration post for migrant birds. Here, people can experience the harmony and unity between man and nature more vividly.

Animal and plant resources in Yeyahu Wetland Park contribute to three unique landscapes here, namely views, birds and plants. Stable water sources, a large area of mudflat and a variety of vegetation types in Yeyahu National Wetland Park provide abundant food resources, favorable habitats, shelter conditions, and appropriate reproduction sites for numerous species of animals. As a result, it's also one of the places with particularly rich biodiversity in Beijing. According to statistics, there are over 400 kinds of plants, 182 species of insects, over 40 species of aquatic animals and 13 species of amphibious reptiles here. Yeyahu Wetland Natural Reserve provides favorable habitat conditions for birds and contains six species of birds, namely swimming birds, wading birds, birds of prey, songbirds, terrestrial birds and Scansores.

As many as 264 species of birds here account for 61% of total species of birds in Beijing. Among them, over 240 species are wetland birds, accounting for 90% of total species of wetland birds in Beijing. There are six species of national first-class protected birds, namely black storks, oriental white storks, great bustards, golden eagles, white-tailed sea eagles and white-head cranes and 34 species of national second-class protected birds like grey cranes, whooping swans and white-napped cranes. The migration of birds is a phenomenon of adaption which can meet their needs for environment and conditions in a particular period, thus providing a reliable guarantee for individual survival and racial reproduction. Among 264 species of birds in Wild Duck Lake, most species are passing migrants, accounting for about 56.6%.
